in the north bay for pg&e. reporting live, sergio quintana, abc-7 news. >> ama: highway 1 at devil slide is now open. chp says an officer was able to clear the roadway quickly, buts' debris remained. traffic in both directions is running smoothly, but county officials wash this part of the coast highway is especially dangerous in proloaned rainstorms. travel will be safer with the completion of the slide tunnel next year. >> our team storm watch coverage continues with nick smith. nick, you were there when a father and daughter had to be rescued from the water near red but -- redwood city. >> they were happy to be out of the water and dry. first responders say the heavy wind and rain made the weather and the waters completely unpredictable. look at some of the video shot earlier today. john paige and his daughter, allison, were rescued by the redwood city fire department after kayaking took a dangerous term. just after 1:00 p.m. redwood city fire received a call telling them two kayakers were strand. water rescue responded and conducted a search, and teams found the two in only minutes using tr

who helped the victim. >> ama: a fishing trip gone horribly wrong. three people sweapt in waters and a father and son are dead. we're learning more about juan escamillo rojas, and his father, who died yesterday afternoon. tomas roman spoke with family men's a short time ago. tomas? >> it's a very taj jig -- trajectoryic store. they were last seen trying to reach shore by a friend who joined them on a friday fishing trip. the friend told us how he struggled to try to save them as they tried to reach shore in the frigid waters. the family has gathered to grieve and say a rosary for juan and his son, one -- juan carlos. he describes it in his native spanish how juan screamed out, my son, my son, and dove into the water to save the boy. he told us how giant wave after wave washed over him and tried to find a way to save him. he tried a fishing rod and line which he managed to get to the pair. the line snapped. he had no other choice, ran up the hill to call 9-1-1. the rescue boat plucked the pair from the water. the gray blanket is covering the bodies of the father and son who died o
home in martinez until the lobby here is repaired. >> ama: we have some breaking news from the east bay. oakland police say a teenage girl was shot and killed in the coliseum this afternoon. the shooting happened on lion way. a second juvenile was out shot and rushed to a hospital. that victim is expected to survive. no arrest has been made. >> the investigation continues after a fire inside a south bay apartment building where a children's sleepover was being held. three members of one family never made it out, including a four-year-old. her grandparents also died in the fire. sergio quintana has the latest live from the scene of the fire. reporter: that family that has been hit so hard by this fire is actually setting up a memorial right now inside one of the apartments in this complex. earlier today, i talked with the woman who lost her mother, her father, and her daughter. >> sill the says the last time she saw her daughter was last knight at bedtime. >> she was staying with your parents? >> yes. she was in their room. >> just at 1:00 p.m. she noticed a fire in her brother's other.

streets. we've had crews all around the bay today. i'm ama daetz. we do have one lane around richmond is open after a big rig struck a person on the road half an hour ago. we'll have details coming up at 11:00. let's check in with leigh glaser when the rain will return. >> it's been a crazy morning around the bay area with that heavy front moving through. you can see behind me live doppler is quiet right now. most of the storm system has moved to the south and east of the bay area. we're not picking up any returns at all. let me show you our 24-hour rainfall totals mainly that occurred this morning. over 2 inches in santa rosa. three inches in mounted st. helena. san francisco inch and a half and lesser amounts as you head towards the santa clara valley. let's take a look at the five day storm totals. three storms moved in here. you can see mount st. helena, close to 13 inches. santa rosa, close to 8 inches as well as san rafael. san francisco close to 4 inches. oakland close to 4 inches and san jose racked up close to 2 1/2 inches. as you mentioned, another system is headed for the b

and then recede quickly tomorrow. we'll check out the rainfall totals and the forecast coming up. >> ama: a warning in the south bay. the creek is about to overflow its banks. we're live in men menlo park. >> this is the bridge and crews just arrive. they brought sandbags and are placing them here along the street. they've also blocked off this entire area. they're trying to keep the curious public away from the rising waters of the creek. where we are, the creek divides palo alto and menlo park, and the last time it overran its banks was back in 1998, and they think it's going to flood again tonight. within the past hour or so men lo park firefighters have been driving through neighborhoods, warning residents about the rising creek. the san mateo county security alert system is calling people. there are homes that run along -- right along the creek, and those residents are feeling a bit nervous right now. >> this is the highest it's been this season. >> it came up high two weeks ago. this is obviously the highest. >> must be concerned about it. >> i'm concerned about property damage and
the waterlogged bay area. tonight there are big problems in some areas. i'm ama daetz. let's check in with leigh glaser >> i've doppler hd a bit calmer than it has been all day long. you can see the latest returns, the cold front that brought us very heavy rainfall has pushed to the south of the bay area heading towards the central valley as well as southern california, still picking up some areas of rain near morgan hill, gilroy, you can see the intensity has started to lessen. a green on the map, more like blue we're looking for some light rain showers moving through that particular area. you can see near santa theresa boulevard hit and miss activity. it was crazy earlier today. look at the rainfall, four inches in some parts. mount st. helena, two inches. inch and a half in half moon bay and close to an inch for san jose. is this it? is there any more out there? we'll take a look at seven-day forecast coming up. >> ama: one of the biggest trouble spots is where parts of the creek is threatening to overflow the banks, it runs through east palo alto and menlo park and palo alto. they have been
>>> good evening, i'm ama daetz. investigators aren't sure what sparked a deadly fire in san jose. three members of one family including a four-year-old were sleeping inside one of the apartments. they never made it out alive. her grandparents also died in the fire. sergio quintana tells us what happened. >> she says the last time she saw her daughter was last night at bedroom time. >> she was staying with your parents? >> yes. >> reporter: just after 11:00, she noticed a fire in her brother's room. you go see the charred window an example of how ferocious the fire burned. she tried to put it out but it was too much. >> you couldn't put it out. >> she escaped along with six other family members, but her parents and her daughter did not. in the apartment downstairs, neighbors heard a commotion and quickly realized it was fire. she says she is scream, call the fire department and then rushed everyone out. three of her grandchildren were there for the weekend and they got out safely but it was scary situation. >> what did you think of that? >> it was pretty cool, i started to cry a l
